The Newfoundland and Labrador government says new clearing efforts are planned to support communities in Conception Bay North as recovery continues following last summer’s wildfires.

The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure has issued a public tender for roadside brush clearing along Route 70, stretching from Spout Cove Bridge to the northern boundary of Northern Bay. The tender is set to close on April 30.

Officials say the work is intended to improve safety and visibility for motorists, including making it easier to spot wildlife, improving sightlines on curves and hills, and allowing more space for snow clearing. In areas affected by the fires, the work will also help remove charred vegetation.

Meanwhile, the Department of Forestry, Agriculture and Lands is expanding access to domestic wood cutting in the region. An additional 50 hectares has been allocated, primarily targeting burned timber near communities.

The expanded cutting areas include parts of Small Point-Broad Cove-Blackhead-Adam’s Cove, along with unincorporated communities such as Kingston, Western Bay, Ochre Pit Cove and Northern Bay. The province says the allowable harvest per domestic permit in these areas will also be doubled.
