Police are asking for the public's assistance as they investigate an attempted robbery on a walking trail in Mount Pearl on Friday morning.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary said officers responded shortly after 9:30 a.m. to a report of a robbery in the Carroll Drive area.

According to police, a woman reported being approached by an unknown man on the Admiralty Walking Trail. The suspect allegedly produced a weapon and attempted to steal her belongings before fleeing toward Richard Nolan Drive.

The woman sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene by paramedics.

Police said the victim and suspect are believed to have been strangers.

A large search effort was launched immediately following the incident, involving Operational Patrol Services, Police Dog Services, a drone operator, all-terrain vehicle officers and Mount Pearl Municipal Enforcement.

The suspect has not been located. He is described as a tall, thin Caucasian man who was wearing a black hoodie and black pants.

The RNC's Major Crime Unit is continuing the investigation and is asking anyone who was in the area between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. Friday and may have information about the incident to contact police at 709-729-8000.

Residents can expect an increased police presence in Mount Pearl throughout the weekend as the investigation continues.

The City of Mount Pearl released a statement that said in part, "This incident is understandably concerning. We remain committed to maintaining a safe environment for all residents through ongoing investments in lighting and trail upgrades, ensuring our network continues to be a safe, accessible, and valued community asset."
