Police Remai Busy Over Long Weekend #nltraffic

The RCMP and RNC teamed up for joint enforcement initiatives over the long weekend on the Avalon Peninsula and more than 110 charges were laid for speeding, insurance, seatbelt use, and other violations under the Highway Traffic Act.

One motorist was stopped on the Trans-Canada Highway near Butter Pot Park for travelling at a rate of 194 km/h. The driver, a 27-year-old Badger's Quay man, was charged for excessive speeding, having an expired driver's license, and for having unsealed Cannabis in his vehicle. His driver's license was suspended and his vehicle was seized and impounded.

Another motorist was stopped on the TCH near Paddy's Pond for travelling at a rate of 151 km/h. The driver, a 23-year-old Gander man, was charged for excessive speeding. His driver's license was suspended and his vehicle was seized and impounded.

During another traffic stop where a motorist was stopped for travelling at a rate of 133 km/h on the TCH near Holyrood, police found that the vehicle was not registered in the last two years and was not insured. The driver, an 18-year-old Grand Falls-Windsor man, was charged for these offences and his vehicle was seized and impounded.

One man now faces criminal charges after he refused to provide a sample of his breath at the roadside following a demand issued by police. Officers stopped his vehicle for having expired registration on the TCH near Holyrood. The driver, a 51-year-old Brigus man, was suspected to be impaired. After refusing to provide breath samples, he was arrested and ticketed for having no insurance and no registration. His driver's license was suspended and his vehicle was seized and impounded. He was released from custody to appear in court on September 25, 2020.
