Pine Marten Showing Signs of Recovery

Writer: Web WritersWeb Writers

Minister of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture Elvis Loveless stated in the House of Assembly that the “Newfoundland Marten” is showing signs of recovery.

The animal population has resulted in a status change from “Threatened” to “Vulnerable”.

This marten population is one of just 14 mammal species native to the island; they’re geographically isolated and genetically and ecologically distinct.

First considered endangered in 1996, recovery programs have been ongoing and in 2002.

Numbers are steadily improving and currently estimated at 2800 mature animals.
