Phone lines established for forest fire emergency as deliveries continue


The provincial government has established two toll-free phone numbers to help field inquiries pertaining to the Central Newfoundland forest fire emergency.


The Provincial Emergency Operations Centre (PEOC) phone line is 1-833-845-0775. This number is for inquiries regarding supplies, transportation and general questions. The PEOC phone line will operate from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.


Central Health Phone Line is 1-833-960-4571 for all health inquiries. The Central Health phone line will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.


A messaging service is available to assist with incoming calls outside the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Additionally, the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure and the Provincial Emergency Operation Centre has begun transporting essential goods by helicopter service to the Coast of Bays region due to the closure of the Bay d’Espoir Highway.


Two helicopters began transporting essential goods between central Newfoundland and Harbour Breton on Monday with more flights scheduled for today and for the remainder of the emergency, as needed.


The Sound of Islay, which departed Lewisporte for Fortune on Sunday, August 7, has been delayed by mechanical difficulties and is in St. John’s for repairs.
