The Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation has issued a request for proposals (RFP) to construct four new apartments on Empire Avenue in St. John’s, as part of efforts to replace homes lost to a 2024 fire.
The new units will replace four homes destroyed in July 2024. The project is jointly funded by the federal and provincial governments through the Canada Community Housing Initiative, part of the National Housing Strategy.
According to the housing corporation, the new development will consist of four one-bedroom units, each approximately 450 square feet, aimed at addressing demand for smaller, more affordable housing. The buildings will also feature energy-efficient construction to help reduce utility costs.
Repairs are also underway on a nearby building damaged in the same fire. Those four units are expected to be ready for occupancy this spring.
The RFP closes April 24, with a contract award anticipated in May.
