Newfoundland and Labrador school enrolment down nearly half from 1970s levels

Newfoundland and Labrador's overall population decline has had an impact on school enrolments in the province. Statistics which date back to 1975 show that the overall number of students in the province is down nearly half from its peak in the 1970s and 1980s.
In the 1976-76 school year, there were 157,768 students enrolled across the province. The most recent statistics from the 2024-25 school year show only 63,842 students enrolled.
NL School lists a total of 255 schools on their website.
Class sizes in 2024-25 were nearly the same across all grade levels. Kindergarten to Grade 3 classes had an average of 18.5 students; those in Grades 4 to 6 had 21.0 students; Grades 7 to 9 had 20.7 students, while Grades 10 to 125 had an average of 20.5 students.
