Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Festival returns to Bannerman Park

The Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Festival returns to Bannerman Park today for a scaled-back celebration marking what organizers are calling its “49 ½” edition.

The one-day festival is scheduled to run from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Organizers said this year’s smaller event is focused on rebuilding the organization and stabilizing its finances while continuing the festival’s long-standing musical traditions.

The morning will feature sessions highlighting traditional music, bluegrass and young performers, before the main stage programming begins at 1 p.m.

The lineup will feature local performers from the traditional, folk and world music scenes.

Unlike previous editions, this year’s festival will not include a beer tent, food concessions or other vendors. Organizers are encouraging attendees to bring their own picnic and enjoy the day in the park. Alcohol will not be permitted.

Admission to the festival is free, thanks in part to support from sponsors, including the provincial government.

Organizers said donations will be accepted as the festival works to rebuild, and volunteers will be available to assist attendees. Festival merchandise will also be available for purchase.

The event will be cashless, with debit and credit cards accepted.

Organizers said they expect to return next year with a larger celebration for the festival’s 50th anniversary.
