Newfoundland and Labrador backs Canada’s defence industrial strategy

Premier Tony Wakeham says Newfoundland and Labrador is ready to support Canada’s new defence industrial strategy and pursue related federal investment opportunities.

Wakeham said the province has the infrastructure, workforce and location needed to contribute to national security efforts and plans to begin discussions with provincial partners on a coordinated approach aligned with the federal plan.

The premier previously raised the province’s defence capabilities during meetings in Ottawa with Prime Minister Mark Carney and federal ministers, including Defence Minister David McGuinty and Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne.

Provincial officials say strengthening Canada’s Arctic and northern presence should also include investments in northern communities alongside military and infrastructure development.
