Patients and staff at the Health Sciences Centre in St. John's are set to benefit from major upgrades to the emergency department as renovations reach a significant milestone.

The new ambulance bay is scheduled to open on Monday, July 27, while additional patient care areas are expected to open on Saturday, Aug. 8.

The renovations are part of a broader effort to modernize the province's busiest emergency department, with the provincial government saying the upgrades will improve safety, patient flow and the overall care experience while providing frontline health-care workers with improved facilities.

The expanded emergency department includes a new high-acuity and trauma area, an assessment unit, a new ambulance garage, a redesigned patient entrance, larger treatment rooms, increased privacy through private patient rooms, improved accessibility, modern medical equipment and enhanced workspaces for staff.

Additional phases of the emergency department renovation are expected to be completed by August 2027.
