The mayor of Salmon Cove and three town councillors have resigned, citing ongoing internal issues they say have prevented the council from effectively governing.
In a joint statement released Tuesday evening, the former officials said they stepped down after facing persistent challenges they were unable to resolve, despite efforts that included seeking legal advice.
“We took on this role to make positive changes and to stand up for the people of this town,” the statement said. “What we’ve faced as a council has been constant ongoing issues that we’ve tried our very best to fix… with no resolution and no clear path forward.”
The group did not provide specific details about the issues.
They alleged the municipality was being “taken advantage of,” adding they were unwilling to remain in their roles without a way to stop it.
The resignations leave the council with limited capacity, with the departing members saying the town’s current operations have been reduced to managing basic functions such as paying bills and addressing ongoing matters.
