Man taken into custody following lengthy standoff in St. John's

The RNC has taken a man into custody without incident following a lengthy standoff in the area of Campbell Avenue at Cashin Avenue in St. John's.

Police were called to the area on Saturday afternoon for what they described as a potential weapons offence.

Officers worked to communicate with the man while surrounding the residence with guns drawn. Information was later received that other residents of the multi-unit home were inside the building. Officers made contact with the occupants to confirm the details.

Police asked people to avoid the area.

Officers remained on the scene to continue the investigation.
