Man deceased after vessel overturns

RCMP says that one man is deceased after a fishing vessel overturned in St. George’s Bay near Lower Cove on Friday morning.

Police received the report of an overturned vessel. Police, firefighters and ambulance attended the scene and observed an individual who appeared to be deceased in the water. Officers observed a 22-foot lobster boat overturned in the water at the shoreline of a steep cliff.

A man, who was also onboard the vessel when it overturned, was stranded and was held up on a cliff.

The Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre was contacted and attended the scene. The survivor was airlifted and rescued from the shoreline. The deceased was recovered by a local fisherman in the area and his body was turned over to police.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and Occupational Health and Safety were engaged.

The investigation is continuing.
