A 52-year-old man has been charged with arson after police say he intentionally set fire to a vehicle in the Cochrane Pond area of St. John’s on Sunday morning.

According to the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary, officers were conducting increased patrols in the area following a recent series of fires. At approximately 8:15 a.m. on July 5, officers using a drone observed a man allegedly setting fire to a vehicle.

Police maintained visual contact with the suspect through the drone while officers on the ground responded and quickly located the man. He was arrested and charged with arson.

The fire was extinguished by the St. John’s Regional Fire Department. No injuries were reported.

The accused was held in custody and was scheduled to appear in court on the arson charge.

Police said investigations into previous fires reported in the Cochrane Pond area remain ongoing.

The RNC is asking anyone who witnesses suspicious activity to report it by calling 709-729-8000. Emergencies and crimes in progress should be reported to 911.
