Man arrested near MUN after report of suspicious person with hammer

A 33-year-old man was arrested in St. John’s early Thursday after police responded to a report of a suspicious person carrying a hammer.
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary were called to the area of Elizabeth Avenue near Memorial University. Officers located the man a short time later and took him into custody.
He faces multiple charges, including assaulting a peace officer, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, two counts of uttering threats, breach of probation, obstruction and mischief.
The man was held in custody to appear in court on Thursday morning.
