Man arrested after attempting to disarm police officer #nltraffic

RCMP has charged 53-year-old Clifford Ellis with numerous criminal offences following a traffic stop in Botwood on Sunday.


just before the noon hour on Sunday RCMP from Grand Falls-Windsor attempted to conduct a traffic stop with a vehicle on Commonwealth Drive in Botwood.


The vehicle failed to stop for police and continued to travel until reaching a residence on Mill Road.


The accused exited the vehicle and displayed aggressive behaviours towards the officers and threatened to damage the police vehicle.


He then resisted arrest and a physical altercation occurred. During the arrest process, Ellis assaulted the officer and attempted to remove the officer’s pistol from the holster but was unsuccessful. A taser was deployed and Ellis was taken into police custody.


Ellis attended court earlier this week and was remanded into custody. He is charged with the following criminal offences:

  • Flight from Police

  • Assaulting a police officer

  • Attempting to disarm a police officer

  • Resisting arrest

  • Uttering threats to damage property

  • Uttering death threats

He attends court again today.
