The federal Liberal Party has selected Danielle Martin, a family physician, to represent the party in the district of University—Rosedale in the upcoming federal by-election in Ontario.
The seat has been held by Liberal MP Chrystia Freeland since its creation in 2015. She resigned from the position on January 9.
The Conservatives and NDP have not announced a candidate at this time.
Martin has spent more than two decades in her family medicine practice, advising governments on health care policy, and working to strengthen Canada’s public health care system. She has served as Executive Vice-President at Women’s College Hospital and led the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto, the largest academic department of family medicine in the world.
The date of the by-election must be announced between January 20 and July 8, 2026.
