Firefighters from Portugal Cove - St. Philip's
Volunteer Fire Department, Torbay Volunteer Fire Department, Pouch Cove Volunteer Fire Department and St. John’s Regional Fire Department responded to reports of a fire at Landings Eatery & Pub located in the town of Portugal Cove.
Firefighters responded to the call at around 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday morning. When crews arrived, fire and smoke could be seen coming from the building. Firefighters quickly attacked the fire but were overpowered by flames, causing them to call in three other departments to battle the blaze.
The fire caused residents in the Portugal Cove area to have no running water and caused a evacuation order to be issued to people in the area of the fire, that order has since been lifted. The fire also caused delays with traffic and a ferry terminal that was located nearby, the ferry that runs back and forth from Portugal Cove to Bell Island was closed as crews worked to contain the blaze.
Firefighters remained on scene for a number of hours, A excavator was utilized to tear down the building so firefighters could put out the remaining fire and hot spots.
Overall the building sustained significant Fire and Water damage. Landings Eatery & Pub said: “Our staff are safe, no one was inside. Thank God.”
