A house fire on Ryan’s Lane just off Kenmount Road closed Kenmount Road on Wednesday.
Firefighters with the St. John’s Regional Fire Department responded to the call just after 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Firefighters arrived in approximately 30 seconds and were met with heavy smoke and fire. They immediately upgraded the call from a residential structure fire to a commercial structure fire, dispatching one extra engine to the call.
Firefighters deployed multiple attack lines along with a ladder truck to control the blaze and stop the fire spreading into a wooden area and a commercial building. Crews then ran into a problem with water. Firefighters had to close Kenmount Road and open another fire hydrant in front of Kelsey’s to keep water on fire.
Kenmount Road was closed between Kelsey Drive and Team Gushue Highway for a period of time as crews worked to extinguish the blaze. Kenmount Road was reopened at a later time to one lane in both directions.
Firefighters would like to give a huge thanks to Kelseys Original Roadhouse for supplying ice to keep the water cold for emergency personnel on scene.
Emergency personnel from the St. John’s Regional Fire Department, Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services, Royal Newfoundland Constabulary and Newfoundland and Labrador Forestry Service attended the scene.
Sadly, one dog has died as a result of the fire. No other injuries were sustained to emergency personnel or others on scene. After the fire was extinguished, the fire destroyed one home and caused damage to two other structures.
