Impaired man arrested following altercation with police

A 52-year-old man has been arrested after a traffic stop on Thursday afternoon near Cochrane Pond Park in St. John’s.

Police suspected the male driver to be impaired. While speaking with the officer, the man became uncooperative. The suspect drove off in an attempt to get away, but police were able to follow the tire tracks to a campsite.

The officer attempted to arrest the suspect, and a physical altercation ensued. After some time, the officer was able to gain control and arrest the suspect.

The accused was released from custody with a future court date. He is charged with flight from police, impaired driving, driving over 80 mg/%, and resisting arrest. Police also impounded the vehicle.
