A 33-year-old man is facing multiple charges following a violent encounter with police after allegedly operating a vehicle while impaired in the east end of St. John’s.

At approximately 9:15 p.m. on Tuesday night, RNC officers responded to reports of a man consuming alcohol while driving through a residential neighborhood. Upon arrival, officers located the suspect, who appeared to be intoxicated and behind the wheel of a vehicle.

Police say the man was arrested at the scene for impaired driving. During the arrest, the suspect reportedly became aggressive, spitting in an officer’s face and later kicking the officer. He refused to comply with a breath test and continued to be combative at the hospital, causing further disturbance.

The man now faces a total of six charges, including:

  • Refusal to comply with a breath demand

  • Assaulting a police officer

  • Uttering threats (2 counts)

  • Breach of a release order

  • Causing a disturbance

  • Resisting arrest

He was taken to the St. John’s City Lock-up and is scheduled to appear in court this morning. His vehicle was seized and his driver’s license was suspended.
