Homeowner support programs to open for applications next week

Newfoundland and Labrador homeowners will have access to expanded financial support for home repairs and accessibility improvements starting next week.

The Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation (NLHC) is opening applications for its expanded Home Repair Program and Home Modification Program, following changes announced earlier this year.

The Home Repair Program provides assistance to low-income homeowners who need to complete essential repairs.

Under the expanded program:

• The forgivable loan increases from $5,000 to $10,000, and from $6,500 to $13,000 in Labrador.

• The lifetime maximum funding increases from $12,500 to $30,000.

• The waiting period to reapply is reduced from seven years to five years.

• NLHC pre- and post-inspections are no longer required.

The income threshold for the program is $42,500, or $65,000 in Labrador.

The Home Modification Program provides funding for accessibility improvements to homes.

Changes to the program include:

• The forgivable loan increases from $7,500 to $15,000.

• Occupational therapist recommendations are no longer required for minor modifications such as handrails and grab bars.

• NLHC pre- and post-inspections are no longer required for minor modifications.

The income threshold for the Home Modification Program is $51,500, or $65,000 in Labrador.

Occupational therapist recommendations will continue to be required for major accessibility work, including bathroom modifications and ramp installations.

The provincial government says the expanded programs are supported by an annualized $7.3-million investment included in Budget 2026.

Applications and additional information will be available through the NLHC when the programs open next week.
