Government House, a national historic site, is located in downtown St. John's on Military Road and serves as the official residence of the Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Construction started in 1827 and was finished in 1831. The home was constructed for the summer season, leading to later inhabitants complaining of the cold.

Today, the home serves as a meeting place for dignitaries visiting the province. This is where swearing-in ceremonies for Cabinet ministers are held, where Royal Assent is granted, and where the Lieutenant-Governor receives the Premier.

The plan for the building was created in England. Workers were brought in from Scotland to construct the home. It cost £38,175, which was five times the original estimate.

The structure is made of red sandstone from Signal Hill and is trimmed with English Portland stone.
