Heavy snow impacting the Avalon Peninsula

New Gower Street Camera, City of St. John's.

Snow started around 5:00 am this morning across the Avalon Peninsula and there is already about 5 centimetres down in some areas in the Metro area.

There are snowfall warnings in effect for St. John's and vicinity and the Avalon Peninsula Southeast as a large low passes southeast of Newfoundland today. The low is sending snow onto the eastern half of the Island with the Avalon Peninsula receiving the most snow.

St. John's and the southeast Avalon will see about 15 to 20 cm of snow, the northern Avalon will see about 10 cm of snow, the southwestern Avalon should see about 5 to 10 cm, and the Burin Peninsula will only see about 2 cm.

The snow will come to an end this afternoon.

Winds will gust to 50 km/h which will produce blowing snow. If you have travel plans be prepared.
