The provincial government will be increasing financial support for foster families and kinship carers throughout the province. Kinship care is approved care provided by family and other significant persons in the child’s life.

The government committed $8 million to strengthen financial support for carers. This funding will introduce new rates for foster and kinship families, taking effect June 1, 2026, and will be reflected in payments on June 16.

The funding will increase monthly support, ranging from $395 to $680 per child or youth based on age and location.

Additionally, the annual operating funding for Foster Families Newfoundland and Labrador will increase to $500,000.

There is also a recruitment campaign in the works to encourage more individuals and families to consider becoming foster parents.
