Gander to mark 25th anniversary of 9/11 with commemoration service

The Town of Gander will mark the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks with a public commemoration service today.

The service will take place at 2 p.m. at the Steele Community Centre and will serve as the central event in Gander's anniversary observances.

The ceremony will bring together survivors, family members, passengers and crew members who were stranded in Gander following the attacks, volunteers, first responders, military representatives, dignitaries and members of the public.

Organizers say the service will focus on three themes: Remember, Honour and Commemorate.

The ceremony will feature music, personal reflections, tributes and ceremonial elements, while recognizing those who lost their lives and reflecting on the lasting impact of the events of Sept. 11.

Gander and surrounding communities played a significant role in Operation Yellow Ribbon, when aircraft were diverted to Canadian airports after the United States closed its airspace following the attacks.

Thousands of passengers and crew members found themselves stranded in Newfoundland and Labrador, with many housed, fed and cared for by residents of Gander and nearby communities.

The anniversary service will recognize the first responders, volunteers and others who assisted the stranded travellers while also celebrating the friendships and connections that developed during the unprecedented event.

The 25th anniversary observance will be open to the public.

Admission is free, but tickets are required.
