Flu levels continue to decline nationally

According to Health Canada, for the week ending February 21, indicators of influenza activity were decreasing, while indicators of COVID-19 activity and RSV activity were stable across the country.


The percentage of tests positive for influenza decreased to 5.5 percent in week 7. Influenza A detections remain predominant, but are decreasing. Influenza B detections were stable, following a period of increase; however, trends vary by region. Among subtyped influenza A detections, influenza A is predominant.


The percentage of tests positive for COVID-19 and the percentage of tests positive for RSV were stable in the most recent reporting week; however, the majority of outbreaks were associated with COVID-19.


The percentage of tests positive for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 in Newfoundland and Labrador was 3.5 percent, the percentage of tests positive for influenza in the Atlantic region was 11.3 percent. The percentage of tests positive for respiratory syncytial virus in the Atlantic region was 6.8 percent.
