Fire at Burin Scrapyard

On Thursday there was a significant fire at the scrapyard of Rene’s Autobody on Main Street in Burin.

The fire was quickly contained and is not believed to be suspicious in nature.

Fore Departments from Burin, Marystown, Winterland and Garnish responded, Provincial Fire Services; a water bomber, Newfoundland Power RCMP and Emergency Health Services also attended the scene.

Due to the severity of the fire and the toxic and volatile nature of the combustible material present, businesses and dwellings in the immediate area were evacuated temporarily and Burin Peninsula Health Centre activated its evacuation plan; however, no evacuation of the hospital was required.

There were no injuries. Damage was primarily contained to the scrapyard of the business.
