The RCMP is investigating the cause of a motor vehicle collision on the Trans-Canada Highway near Hillview that resulted in the death of one individual on Saturday.
Early on Saturday morning, the RCMP responded to a report of a motor vehicle collision between a sport utility vehicle and a commercial tractor-trailer unit on the Trans-Canada Highway in Hillview near the Route 205 exit.
The Northern Bight Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services personnel also responded to the crash.
The occupant of the SUV, a 76-year-old man, was rushed from the scene to Dr. G.B. Cross Memorial Hospital in critical condition. He later succumbed to his injuries in hospital.
The driver of the transport truck was also transported to the local hospital by NL Health Services personnel for medical assessment and treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
A Collision Reconstructionist with RCMP Traffic Services attended the scene to assist with the investigation, and the highway was closed for several hours while officers examined the scene and crews took steps to clear debris - including spilled hazardous fluids - in order to make the roadway safe for passage.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has been engaged, and the investigation into the cause of the collision is continuing at this time.
