Elderly woman avoids being scammed thanks to store employee & RCMP

On Wednesday morning the RCMP received a call from a business in Bay Roberts stating that an elderly woman was in the store trying to purchase $500.00 worth of various gift cards to avoid being arrested.

The store clerk that called police recognized that the woman was likely being victimized as part of a scam and tried to convince the woman not to purchase the cards.

The woman was so fearful of being arrested that she did not believe the clerk and said she was afraid to return to her home.

An officer with the Bay Roberts Detachment attended the store, spoke to the woman and educated her on these types of scams and assured her she would not be arrested.
