Driver crashes car, flees scene, assaults police officer

RCMP arrested a 19-year-old Holyrood man after police responded to the report of a single-vehicle crash in Spaniard’s Bay on Saturday.

A car struck a retaining wall of a business on the Main Road in Spaniard’s Bay.

The driver was seen fleeing the area on foot prior to police arrival.

Officers located the man hiding inside a nearby dumpster. The driver showed signs of impairment, resisted arrest, assaulted an officer and was taken into police custody. He was transported back to the detachment and refused to provide breath samples.

The man was later released from custody and is set to attend court at a later date to answer to charges of impaired driving, refusing to provide a breath sample, resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer.

His licence was suspended and the car was seized and impounded.
