The Liberal Party of Canada has nominated Ontario MPP Doly Begum as its candidate for Scarborough Southwest in the next federal election.
The party made the announcement Thursday, highlighting Begum’s more than seven years representing the Scarborough area at Queen’s Park, most recently as Ontario NDP deputy leader and shadow minister for public transit.
“Doly Begum has a strong track record of public service and getting results for her community,” Liberal Party of Canada president Sachit Mehra said in a statement. He said Begum will work with Liberal Leader Mark Carney and the party’s federal team to deliver “the serious leadership Canadians expect and deserve.”
Begum was first elected as the Member of Provincial Parliament for Scarborough Southwest in 2018. Before entering provincial politics, she held leadership roles in the community, including co-chair of the Scarborough Health Coalition and vice-chair of Warden Woods Community Centre.
