CUPE Newfoundland and Labrador is calling out the Town of Grand Falls-Windsor for what it calls a "shameful" act.

CUPE President Sherry Hillier says the town terminated a long-standing employee after participating in local elections. The employee was terminated on December 5 and had been an employee for 18 years.

Hillier said, “Every citizen of Grand Falls-Windsor has the right to participate in and comment on local elections. Working for the town doesn’t suddenly take away that right.”

Hillier added, “It’s absolutely shameful the town would use such an excuse to fire one of their employees and the local union president—and that’s just what it is: an excuse.”

The union plans to fight the termination by filing a grievance for arbitration.

Newfound News reached out to the Town of Grand Falls-Windsor for comment. They stated, "The Town does not comment on specific HR matters."
