Correctional officer training program expanding to Labrador

The Newfoundland and Labrador government said a correctional officer training program will be offered in Labrador this summer as part of efforts to strengthen staffing and support within the province’s correctional system.
Officials said successful graduates of the Correctional Officer Recruitment Training Program will be offered employment in Labrador, helping address ongoing staffing needs in the region.
The province also noted that 38 students are currently enrolled in the program in St. John’s and Mount Pearl. Those recruits are expected to join correctional facilities across Newfoundland and Labrador in May.
The training program includes both classroom and hands-on instruction, covering topics such as mental health, cultural awareness, and the complex needs of inmates. Recruits also receive operational training, including response to emergency situations and use-of-force procedures.
Government officials said the program is designed to prepare recruits for the challenges of working with vulnerable populations, while promoting rehabilitation and efforts to reduce repeat offences.
Earlier this year, officials visited the Labrador Correctional Facility to meet with staff and review planned renovations aimed at improving conditions for both employees and inmates.
The province said correctional officers play a key role in the justice system and acknowledged their work in supporting rehabilitation and maintaining public safety.
