Container ship runs aground on the west coast of the Island

The Container Ship the MSC Baltic III ran aground near the Bay of Islands after it lost power this morning and issued a mayday call.


The Coast Guard and search and rescue from Gander responded to the call and airlifted all 20 crew members to safety.


Premier Andrew Furey said on X, "Thanks to the first responders who always take quick action, regardless of the time or the weather, all 20 crew members are safe. We continue to monitor the situation on the west coast."


The ship is sailing under the flag of Liberia. It is 207.3 meters and has a width of 29.8 meters.
