The City of St. John’s is launching a new educational toolkit and a series of information sessions aimed at helping seniors and older adults recognize, prevent and report financial fraud.

The initiative, supported by the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program, includes a comprehensive resource designed to raise awareness of financial abuse, scams and fraud that commonly affect older people.

“Financial scams can have a serious impact on seniors’ independence, confidence and well-being,” Mayor Danny Breen said in a statement. “These resources and information sessions will give people tools they can use to protect themselves and feel confident navigating an increasingly complex financial landscape.”

As part of the program, the city will host both in-person and online sessions offering practical guidance on identifying scam warning signs, understanding common fraud tactics and protecting personal and financial information. Participants will receive printed tip sheets and a list of local and national support resources.

The initiative aligns with the city’s Building Safer Communities Strategy, which focuses on increasing public awareness and education. City officials say regular collaboration with community partners helped ensure the toolkit and sessions are accessible, relevant and practical.

While the sessions are designed for seniors and older adults, the city says anyone interested in learning more about fraud and scam prevention is welcome to attend. In-person sessions have limited capacity, and lunch or light refreshments will be provided depending on the time of day.

Session schedule:

  • H.G.R. Mews Community Centre: Monday, March 2, from noon to 2 p.m. (lunch provided)

  • Paul Reynolds Community Centre: Tuesday, March 3, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (lunch provided)

  • H.G.R. Mews Community Centre: Tuesday, March 3, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. (light refreshments provided)

  • Online session (hosted by Seniors NL): Thursday, March 26, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Advance registration is required by Feb. 20. Residents can register online or by calling 709-576-8411.
