The provincial government is defending its decision to cancel a contract for a new K-12 school in Cartwright, but residents and local officials continue to demand answers about the future of the long-awaited project.

Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Barry Petten issued an update Tuesday on the situation, nearly two weeks after the province terminated the school construction contract, citing escalating costs, delays, design concerns and site-related issues.

The project, announced in 2025, was intended to replace aging school infrastructure in the Labrador community. However, government officials now say continuing with the contract could have pushed the final price tag to nearly $50 million and delayed completion by more than a year.

While the province argues cancelling the contract was necessary to protect taxpayers, the decision has sparked anger in Cartwright, where residents say they have been left without a clear path forward for a new school.

The government has promised to explore more affordable alternatives, including a modular school that could be manufactured off-site and assembled in the community. However, no timeline or detailed plan has been provided, leaving many residents questioning when, or if, a replacement school will be built.

In his statement, Petten said planning a new school involves a lengthy process requiring design work, evaluation of alternatives and assessments to ensure the project is safe, sustainable and cost-effective.

When the cancellation was first announced, residents raised concerns about the condition of the partially developed site and potential safety issues. The province says the contractor will return to complete site stabilization work before leaving the community.

For many residents, however, the larger issue remains unanswered: what comes next for students in Cartwright after the cancellation of a project that was expected to deliver a new school for the community.
