Cannonballs discovered during renovations in Jerseyside prompt safety warning from RCMP

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Placentia are urging the public to exercise caution after several cannonballs were uncovered during renovations at a home in Jerseyside earlier this week.
Police say the discovery was reported on March 30, 2026, after the provincial archaeologist alerted officers to the find at a property located next to a known archaeological site.
The RCMP Explosive Disposal Unit was called in to assess the situation and attended the home, where the items were safely removed and disposed of.
While cannonballs are often thought of as solid steel objects, police warn that some can be hollow and may contain explosive black powder, making them potentially dangerous.
Authorities note that Newfoundland and Labrador’s long military history has led to similar discoveries across the province, and such items should always be treated as live munitions.
The RCMP is reminding residents that if any suspected weapons or munitions are found, they should not be handled or moved. Instead, people are asked to contact their local police immediately and provide a description and location so trained personnel can respond safely.
