Canada criticizes China’s military drills around Taiwan

Canada is voicing opposition to China’s decision to conduct large-scale military exercises around Taiwan, warning against any unilateral actions that could alter the status quo in the region.
In a statement issued Thursday, Global Affairs Canada said Ottawa opposes efforts to change conditions across the Taiwan Strait without mutual agreement.
“The Taiwan Strait is indispensable to the security and prosperity of the international community,” the department said. “It is in the interest of all parties to maintain the peaceful and accessible nature of this waterway.”
China announced the military drills around Taiwan, which Beijing considers a breakaway province. Taiwan’s government rejects that claim.
