The federal government says it is providing $8 million in accelerated funding to help address worsening humanitarian conditions in Cuba.

Anita Anand and Randeep Sarai said Wednesday the funding will be released immediately to support food and nutrition programs for vulnerable Cubans.

According to Global Affairs Canada, Cuba is facing rapidly worsening conditions driven by severe fuel shortages, prolonged blackouts and growing barriers to accessing food and health care. Officials say the country’s energy crisis, compounded by last year’s challenges, including Hurricane Melissa, has increased the vulnerability of millions of people.

The funding is part of an international assistance program aimed at strengthening local food security and nutrition. Canada says the aid will be delivered through partnerships with the World Food Programme and UNICEF to help ensure support reaches people directly.

Ottawa says it will continue to monitor the situation in Cuba and remain in contact with partners to assess and respond to evolving needs.
