Big Game Season Opens Across Newfoundland and Labrador

Big game hunting season opens in most areas of Newfoundland and Labrador today.

On the island, the moose season runs from September 12 to December 31, except in national parks. Moose hunting in Gros Morne National Park begins September 26 and runs until January 31, 2027, while the season in Terra Nova National Park runs from October 13 to January 31, 2027.

In Labrador, moose hunting is permitted from September 12, 2026, through March 14, 2027.

The island caribou season runs from September 12 to December 6, with dates varying in Caribou Management Areas 70, 71 and 72. Caribou hunting is prohibited in Labrador.

The island black bear season runs from September 12 to November 30. In Labrador, black bear season began August 10 and continues through November 30.

Coyote season runs province-wide from September 12, 2026, to July 15, 2027. Wolf season dates vary by region.

Trapping and small game seasons vary by species and region.

Hunters and trappers are encouraged to submit hunter return forms and participate in specimen collection programs for moose, caribou, black bears, coyotes and wolves.

New hunters who want to be eligible for the 2027-28 Big Game Licence Draw must complete the Canadian Firearms Safety/Hunter Education Course by November 30, 2026.

Resource Enforcement Officers will conduct dedicated hunting and trapping patrols throughout the season. Hunters and trappers are responsible for knowing and following applicable regulations.
