The provincial government has opened applications for the 2026 Vegetable Transplant Program, aimed at helping commercial farmers get an early start on the growing season and boost local food production.
Applications are being accepted from commercial vegetable producers until Feb. 16, 2026.
The program provides eligible farmers with access to high-quality, low-cost vegetable seedlings, helping to increase both the quantity and variety of crops grown in the province. Earlier access to transplants also supports earlier harvests, an important benefit given Newfoundland and Labrador’s short, cool growing season.
Available crop varieties include cabbage, rutabaga, broccoli, cauliflower, onion, kale, lettuce, leek and asparagus. All transplants are grown at the Centre for Agriculture and Forestry Development in Wooddale.
In 2025, the program produced approximately four million vegetable transplants, which were distributed to 127 farmers across the province.
Priority for the 2026 program will be given to farmers who can demonstrate success with previous programs. The program guide and online application form are available through the Department of Forestry, Agriculture and Lands website.
