Another copper wire theft from a substation

There has been another theft from a substation.

RCMP are investigating after someone entered the Newfoundland Power substation in Hare Bay and stole an undisclosed amount of copper wire and damaged some of the property.

The theft happened sometime overnight between June 30 and July 1.

Anyone having information about this incident is asked to contact Glovertown RCMP at 709-533-2828 or contact Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-TIPS.

Newfoundland Power said in a statement last week that they are extremely concerned with the recent frequency of acts of vandalism to the province’s electricity system.

There have been break-ins at three of the Company’s high voltage facilities over the last couple of months. Vandals illegally entered Glenwood Substation, Topsail Hydroelectric Generating Plant and Boyd’s Cove Substation, causing damage to electrical equipment and stealing copper grounding wire that was connected to the high voltage electricity grid.

Entering high voltage substations to steal grounding wire, which is an important part of a substation’s protection system, is extremely dangerous.
