Another challenging day unfolding for Kingston fire

The Department of Fisheries, Forestry and anticipates another challenging day for wildfire suppression teams.
The Kingston fire remains out of control. Windy conditions, combined with an Extreme Fire Weather Index, are expected to continue to contribute to extreme fire behaviour and growth again today. The weather remains extremely volatile with 30 km/h southwest winds and forecasted gusts of 50 km/h.
Latest boundary mapping indicates the fire has grown to just over 4,895 ha, mostly along the northern boundary at the edge of Western Bay. The fire is anticipated to move towards Ochre Pit Cove by this evening.
Four water bombers, and four helicopters are focusing on the northern edge of the fire. Ground crews and heavy equipment will continue work on fuel breaks on the southern edge of the fire. A 20-person crew from Ontario and additional air support from Quebec arrived to assist yesterday. Coast Guard helicopters are assisting to enhance operational capacity.
The Holyrood fire remains at 22 hectares with no growth reported. The fire is classified as Being Held, with minimal fire behavior observed and the fire fully contained with hose lines. Crews continue to work on the fire and residents are asked to proceed with caution on roads and around properties.
Suppression crews continue to hold the northern area of the fire at Martin Lake. Two water bombers and a bird dog aircraft will provide aerial support with ground crews today. Crews are focusing on the southwestern edge and cabin areas.
There is no impact on Route 360 this morning. Officials continue to closely monitor the status of the highway.
The fire reported August 9 on the Grand Lake forest access road system north of Happy Valley-Goose Bay reported has been declared out.
Crews are assessing another wildfire reported 19 km due south of Happy Valley-Goose Bay, east of the Trans-Labrador Highway. Helicopters and ground crew are responding. Both fires appear to be caused by lightning.
