Today, Prime Minister Mark Carney will announce the government’s plan to restore 24 Sussex Drive. The announcement comes at 11:00 NT.
The building, the former residence of the Prime Minister of Canada, was vacated in 2015 when Justin Trudeau became prime minister and chose not to move into 24 Sussex because of the building's deteriorating condition.
Trudeau moved into Rideau Cottage, situated on the grounds of Rideau Hall.
In 2022, the NCC began the process of closing 24 Sussex Drive due to health and safety reasons. In 2023, the abatement and decommissioning project began.
The building has undergone the removal, cataloguing and storing of heritage fabric, such as doors and mouldings, the abatement of designated substances, such as asbestos, and the removal of obsolete mechanical, heating and electrical systems.
