The U.K. has a new Prime Minister.

On Monday, Andy Burnham became Prime Minister.

Burnham was elected Member of Parliament for Leigh in June 2001. He served in government between 2007 and 2010. While in opposition, he was Shadow Secretary of State for Health, Shadow Secretary of State for Education, and Shadow Home Secretary.

In May 2017, he became Mayor of Greater Manchester, a post he held until 2024.

In June 2026, he was elected as the MP for Makerfield and became Party Leader on July 16.

Burnham is married and has three children.

Keir Starmer announced his resignation last month. The resignation came after internal divisions within the governing party that led to several resignations of ministers. There were also rifts on issues such as economic policy, immigration, and electoral strategy.
