About half a million people without power as Fiona slams Atlantic Canada

The Canadian Hurricane Centre said that Fiona made landfall between Canso and Guysborough Nova Scotia.

At this time there are over 400,000 customers without power in Nova Scotia. Over 82,000 have lost power on Prince Edward Island.

Fiona is unofficially the lowest pressured land falling storm in Canada according to the Canadian Hurricane Centre with a barometric pressure of 931.6 MB at Hart Island.

This morning winds are still gusting well over 100 km/h across most of the Maritimes. The heavy rain will come to an end near noon from south to north. Areas on Cape Breton Island and Prince Edward Island will see rain for much of the day.

Across southern and western Newfoundland the strongest winds have yet to arrive. Winds will begin to pick up in intensity reaching the peak this afternoon. Winds will gust from 120 km/h to 150 km/h except gusts to 180 km/h in the Wreckhouse area.

Power outages are expected across western Newfoundland as the winds increase.

If you are in the region, please take proper precautions and listen to local authorities. Our team is in touch with the provinces – and we’re mobilizing resources to support however needed."
