Mokami Status of Women Council Celebrate 40-Year Anniversary

Mokami Status of Women Council in Celebration of 40 years will be hosting a week of events that are open to attend, free of charge, during the week of November 18th to November 22nd.

In 1979, a group of women began the Happy Valley-Goose Bay Status of Women Council.

Their initial focus was to start a transition house in the area (which they achieved with Libra House in 1986), but their work soon incorporated other women’s issues such as rape crisis, day care, women and the constitution, and housing.

They also supported the Women’s Health Education Project, which was being run by the Newfoundland Status of Women Council (later known as the St. John’s Status of Women Council) and the Women’s Institutes in the early 80s.
