RCMP Seize Massive Amount of Contraband Tobacco

The RCMP's Federal Serious & Organized Crime Unit in Gander initiated an investigation two weeks ago into suspected possession of contraband tobacco, contrary to the Provincial Revenue Administration Act, as well as the Federal Excise Act, 2001.

On Tuesday, three individuals were arrested in Grand Falls-Windsor.

The search of two transport trucks and a passenger van resulted in the seizure of 3000 cartons of contraband tobacco, along with a quantity of Canadian currency.

One carton of contraband tobacco can sell for $40-$50 on the street, putting the street value of the tobacco seized in the range of $120,000 to $150,000.

The three individuals have been released and the investigation is continuing.

Charges are anticipated.
