Sheshatshiu RCMP Charges Man with Number of Offences
Sheshatshiu RCMP received a report of a suspected impaired driver on Route 520.
Police made a patrol and located the described vehicle, which was traveling at a high rate of speed and attempted to effect a traffic stop.
The vehicle did not slow or stop for police and continued to drive in the direction of North West River at a high rate of speed. Police did not pursue the vehicle due to the risk for public safety.
Officers patrolled the community of North West River, receiving information from people in the area who confirmed seeing the vehicle drive by.
The vehicle was located by police. The driver, 56-year-old Albert Michelin of Portugal Cove-St Philip’s, had fled on foot and was located by officers moments later. He was arrested for flight from police and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. Officers observed signs of impairment and read a demand for a breath sample at roadside. Michelin refused to provide a breath sample.
Police seized his vehicle and issued a driver’s licence suspension. Michelin has since been released from custody and faces charges of flight from police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and refusing to provide a breath sample.
Sheshatshiu RCMP are looking to speak with a witness, driving a silver colored SUV, who had advised one of the responding officers near the Sheshatshiu Detachment of almost being struck by the suspect vehicle.
